Lebanese-born artist Etel Adnan is a leading voice in Arab-American culture, whose work moves fluidly between the disciplines of writing and the visual arts.
Since Adnan exhibited at dOCUMENTA(13) in 2012, the Lebanese poet, painter, and philosopher has attracted widespread attention, extending her acclaim from a respected novelist. Her 1977 novel Sitt Marie Rose on the Lebanese Civil War won the France-Pays Arabe award, and a book of poems The Arab Apocalypse also addressed the horrors on the same subject. The themes of exile and identity are explored in her works in the theatre, opera and documentaries.
A seasoned philosopher, the 90 year-old artist’s spirited creativity came out of the poets’ movement against the Vietnam War in the 1970s. However, her paintings reveal a tranquil Elysium, vivid compositions that are minimal yet loaded with an economy of forms.
The Hong Kong exhibition will feature a new group of vibrant and expressive paintings, created by applying oil paint to a canvas with a palette knife. The rapid, thick strokes used evoke landscape scenes – mountain shapes, the horizon, the sea and the sun – often inspired by places of personal importance, particularly Mount Tamalpais near her home in California, as well as the Mediterranean Sea.
